How Can severe Lower Abdominal Pain Be Treated?

I have pain in my lower left abdomen. It has become sharp on occasion and sore to slight pressure topically. I have had recent colonoscopies and no polyps, but I do have some diverticulosis. However the gasterenterologist said I wouldn t need another colonoscopy as it has been clear. I am a 76 yr. old female in good health. This spot especially hurts when I get up from sitting from a long time...(I sew), but the longer I am up and walking the less it hurts. Does this require medical attention, or should I first try anti-inflammatories. Diet seems to make no difference as I have gone days without eating and it still hurts.

Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.

You are right in thinking you could take anti-inflammatories.

From what you have mentioned, I think you may be having a muscle strain of your lower abdominal muscle/groin region muscle. Groin pain can be due to problems in the hip too. Hip joint pain can manifest as purely groin without any pain in the hip joint. It could be due to hip osteoarthritis or bursitis (inflammation of fluid filled sac) of hip joint. There is a possibility that there could be an inguinal hernia. Hernia is a condition where the abdominal cavity contents (mainly a loop of bowel) can pop outside due to a defect in the abdominal wall muscle. This can cause pain too.

I do not think it could be your diverticulitis pain.

You could take any anti-inflammatory (provided you are not allergic to them, and do not have any contraindications for not taking them). Take them with food, if you take them on empty stomach it could lead to gastritis. To prevent gastritis you could take Lansoprazole 30 mg once day/Rabeprazole 20 mg once a day on an empty stomach. Most commonly available anti-inflammatories are ibuprofen 200-400 mg three times a day or naproxen 250 mg- 500 mg two times a day.

If the pain is still persisting you could also take paracetamol 500 mg-1000 mg 3-4 times/day (as long as you are not allergic to them and do not have any liver problems) in addition to anti-inflammatories.

As you sew, avoid sitting for too long. Periodically, say every 30 minutes, get up and do some gentle stretches of your lower back and hip joint for 3-5 minutes and walk a few steps too. This will prevent your muscles and joints to become stiff.

If despite the above management the pain persists, then you need to see your doctor.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you
